An applicant who has obtained a master's degree in the study program of alpine and high mountain biology at IHMB UNIZA, or in another related study program in the field of environmental sciences at another university according to Directive No. 178, can apply for the rigorous examination.

The applicant applies for the rigorous procedure, which includes a rigorous examination and the defense of a rigorous thesis, thereby demonstrating that, based on independent study and independent professional scientific work in the field of study, they have acquired deeper knowledge in its broader foundation and are capable of independently acquiring new scientific knowledge and applying it creatively in practice.

By passing the rigorous examination, which includes the defense of the rigorous thesis, the University of Žilina in Žilina awards applicants the academic title: in the field of ecological and environmental sciences "Doctor of Natural Sciences" (abbreviated as "RNDr.")
